The fun thing about living in Northwest Houston is we have the conveniences of the big city, with a few small town gems in the mix.

Season's Harvest Cafe is one of those gems.

Season's Harvest Cafe is a farm-to-table restaurant, serving whole foods that are in season and grown locally, using organic and hormone-free as much as possible. They are tucked away in precious little house off Grant Road, and offer a perfect place to meet friends or business associates for breakfast, lunch or coffee.

Their unique menus are posted on Facebook and change daily. I ordered the raw entrée selection of the day: Zucchini Linguini topped with raw Texas pecan and organic basil pesto which was served with a seasonal salad including home-grown sprouts, seeds, fruit, vegetables, and nuts, tossed in Raw Honey-Apple Cider Vinegar Dressing. OH MY MERCY...it was incredible! I had never ordered an entrée that was entirely raw. And check out the other two options for the day:

French Peasant Loaf Crusty French Baguette brushed with Olive Oil and filled with Organic Smoked Turkey Breast, thin slices of melted Provolone Cheese, a sprinkling of Organic Fresh Herbs, Organic Mesclun Salad Greens, Sautéed Sweet Onions, and freshly-ground black pepper
Served with choice of House Salad or Soup

Harvest Salad with Crumbled Goat Cheese
The season’s harvest of Herbs, Fruit, Home-grown Sprouts, Seeds, Greens, and Nuts topped with Crumbled Goat Cheese. Served with Balsamic House Dressing and Grilled Artisan Bread

Donating That Candy

Ok, y'all....we've had over a week with all that candy. It's out of site, out of mind for your kids....but you still catch yourself stealing a piece here, a piece there.

Don't lie.

You've sampled your favorites and it's time to stop hiding in the pantry, eating just one more piece, and get that candy out of your house!

I know we have been enjoying these unseasonably cool temps in H'town but summer weather is coming and at some point you are going to want to take it indoors.

Several theaters in our area are offering reduced rate movies this summer.

Studio Movie Grill locations are offering $1/child and $2/adult tickets for 11 movies this summer. Click here for their summer line up. Movies are shown at 11 am Monday-Friday

The Houston Silverado IMAX on Hwy. 249 in Tomball welcomes families for Family Film Festival every Saturday at 10 am. Just $3.99 provides kids with "all you can eat pancakes" as well.

So....my normal sources are not delivering the 411 on the Spring Markets and with me giving up Facebook for Lent...I am very much out of the know right now.

Sigh....

But here is what I DO know...

The Longwood Gift Market is this Thursday April 21st from 9 am - 7 pm at the Longwood Golf Course Pavillion.

Gleannloch Farms is having their market a week later on Thursday April 28th from 9:30 am -5:30 pm at the Gleannloch Pines Golf Club.

And I'm pretty sure Coles Crossing is having one but I have nada in the way of information..

And so begs the question....where in the world is the info for the Spring Markets?

Wee Wuns Weekday Ministries, a ministry of Cypress United Methodist Church, is gearing up for our 9th Annual Golf Tournament. The Families In Action Parent Support Organization at Wee Wuns is excited to host this year’s tournament on Friday, April 1, 2011 at Cypress Lakes Golf Club. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the spiritual, emotional and intellectual growth of children through an Accredited Preschool and Toddler program.

Last year, donations from individuals and business owners like you helped make our golf tournament a big success! We were able to raise over $11,000 for Wee Wuns to improve our playgrounds and classrooms, purchase necessary school supplies and classroom furniture, fund teacher training and accreditation, and most importantly, provide student scholarships. These accomplishments would not have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors, donors and players.

We need your help to make our 2011 Golf Tournament another success by sponsoring a team or donating your products, services and/or gift certificates. Base Camp is Pine Cove's newest summer day camp right in our neighborhood! They're coming to our town with all the fun activities, great staff, and life-changing ministry that happens in a week of camp.

A base camp is a place where people start a journey. After five days with some of the most fun and exciting college students in the country, kids will be energized for the upcoming year and ready for their own spiritual journey. Campers will experience Jesus through Bible study, worship, and time with their counselor as well as participate in tons of great camp activities. Prepare for your journey at Pine Cove Base Camp!

It's 80 degrees in H-town and people are beginning the planning phases of their own version of extreme makeovers for their sad yards that are left bare from crazy freeze we had a few weeks back.

And Spring brings markets!

The Gypsy Market will be held Thursday March 10th from 1-8 pm and Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th from 9:30-5 pm. Wine and hor'dourves wil be served from 6-8 pm on Thursday evening.

Houston Family Arts Center is presenting Willy Wonka at the Berry Center in March. Based on Roald Dahl's famous story, this is a magical show with all the songs you love from the musical with a new twist! Come be a part of it as Charlie and four other winners of the golden tickets tour Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. A fantasy world will be created on stage with wild inventions, crazy colors and of course, Oompa Loompas!

Recommended for 5 and up. Children under the age of 3 are not permitted to attend Mainstage performances.

It's no secret I really enjoy gift markets. Granted, most in this area have some of the same vendors that I know and love dearly, but I still like to pop in and take a peek to see if there is anything I just cannot live without.

Plus, I get the chance to love on my friends who are uber creative and have booths at these markets.

There was a Christmas in July market this summer at a nearby church and I discovered 2 gals that are taking cupcakes to a whole 'nutha level.

Mercy me. These cupcakes are the perfect trifecta: look amazing, smell delightful and taste like nothing I had ever tasted.

May I introduce you to D'Lish Cupcakes?

Monica and Jen are the co-owners of D'Lish Cupcakes. They bake these darlin' treats in their own kitchens in Spring, TX.

They offer cupcake catering for all occasions: private parties, birthdays, corporate events, weddings and gifts (I took a box of 4 to a friend as a housewarming gift, SCORE!)

They offer a myriad of unique flavors. The Houston Zoo wants to offer you complimentary admission!

According PAIGE HEWITT of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE ... "Rather than offering free admission on already-crowded holidays, patrons now will be admitted for free after 2 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month."

So which Tuesdays are the free days? The zoo website states "the Houston Zoo will offer free admission to our guests on the first Tuesday of every month from 2 p.m. until closing. During the months that Daylight Saving Time is in effect, the Houston Zoo closes at 7 p.m. (last admission at 6 p.m.). During Central Standard Time, the Houston Zoo closes 6 p.m. (last admission at 5 p.m.)."

Packing a Lunch

Packing lunches are a lot like shopping for jeans or choosing a Mexican restaurant....everyone likes different things.

I recently read the article below, and thought it might give us a little jump start as we begin this daily regime in just under 2 weeks. You'll notice this teacher/mom prefers natural foods...no trans fats, nitrates, extra sugar, etc. Whatever your preferences, a lot of option are listed.

Packing a Lunch: Healthy Food to Go

There are two philosophies in packing kids’ lunches:

1. Let kids help so that they have some agency, some choice in the process. That will encourage them to eat what has been packed, and Mom is more informed about what they like.

2. Pack kids’ lunches yourself. Then you are in charge not only of what is packed, but portion sizes. Sometimes this is important, but I would tend toward the first philosophy unless you have a strong reason to go with number 2.

Many parents find great success in making a list of foods with the child(ren), organizing it by category (main dish, vegetables, fruits, snacks, fun foods, etc) and allowing the child(ren) to choose an item from each list for the day’s lunch. If this is too complicated for you (for example, the more kids you have, the less they probably get to choose because you must streamline the packing process!), may I highly recommend this policy:

Whatever goes to school, comes back home, unless you have eaten it.

I always told my students to take home whatever they didn’t eat, “So that moms and dads know what you like, what you don’t like, and how hungry you were today.“ (Broken record teacher line right there, were you feelin’ it?) I explained that taking home the half sandwich you didn’t like because it had mustard on it and you hate mustard is a very effective way of communicating, almost like writing a note. Sometimes I even told kids to write notes about dislikes and put them into the lunchboxes! Do explain this concept to your kids; it’s a great way to stay in control even when you’re out of control because you’re not there. :)

Ideas for healthy school lunches lunch

If you’ve been struck with “lunch-packing block” in the past (you know, like writers’ block, except you can’t think of anything creative to pack instead), it is my fervent hope that you will find some new ideas on these lists that get you packin’ once again.

Healthy, Packable Foods for School Lunches
(and others who eat away from home)

* Cut veggies with dip
o Veggie ideas: cherry tomatoes, carrots, pea pods, cucumbers, cauliflower or broccoli spears, celery, fresh green beans, colored peppers,
o Dip ideas: hummus, homemade yogurt dip or yogurt cheese dip, ranch dressing, even ketchup if it’ll get them to eat their veggies!
* Apples and natural peanut butter (kids love to dip!)
* Frozen peas
* Homemade yogurt (with frozen fruit and/or granola in it)
* Fresh fruit, whole or cut depending on the child
o Bananas, oranges, apples, pears, plums, melon, grapes, cherries, strawberries, peaches, nectarines…try to stick with what is more or less in season and watch the Dirty Dozen list.
* Dried fruit
* Homemade whole grain muffins/quick breads
* Hard-boiled egg with salt and pepper (cut in half is easier to handle)
* Sandwiches (on 100% whole grain bread or homemade):how to pack nutritious lunch healthy
o Natural peanut butter and raw honey
o PB and jelly (I made honey-sweetened freezer jam this year; just be sure to watch the ingredients for high-fructose corn syrup if you buy it)
o PB and banana
o PB and pickle
o Leftover roast chicken or turkey
o Egg salad, chicken salad, or tuna salad
o Cream cheese and jelly
o PB and cream cheese
o Son’s new favorite: cream cheese with strawberry slices and raw honey
o BLT
o Bean spreads (search for recipes that used mashed beans as a sandwich spread – a great way to get protein in without breaking the bank or dealing with lunchmeat nitrites/nitrates)
o Try making a wrap to switch it up, but watch the tortilla ingredients for trans fats. I make my own homemade tortillas.
* Cheese and whole grain crackers
* Cottage cheese with various mix-ins
* Homemade “lunchables” – a reader idea from Llama Momma – stack crackers, cheese slices, and meat slices for the child to assemble with apple slices and cream cheese dip.
* Leftovers that can handle the “thermos” treatment:
o Homemade soups
o Homemade mac-n-cheese
o Many casseroles
o Spaghetti and other pasta dishes
o Stir fry with brown rice
o Of course, heat on the stove before packing in the thermos. Not that I would use the microwave anyway, but mic’d food just doesn’t hold the heat long enough, no matter what.
* Potato salad
* Cold bean salad (same idea as above – you know me and beans!)
* Leftover homemade whole wheat pizza
* Homemade granola bars
* Homemade applesauce or storebought natural (no sugar) applesauce. Add cinnamon for your kids to sweeten it up a little without adding a sweetener. My kids also like cinnamon-applesauce stirred into their yogurt.

Convenience packaging options:

* Natural applesauce single cups
* Goldfish crackers, only the “Made with Whole Grain” version
* Pretzels, as long as there isn’t HFCS or trans fats in the ingredients
* Boxed cereal and milk
* Canned fruit cups
* Store granola bars…but be wise about reading ingredients
* Plain yogurt with fruit in it or organic yogurt cups
* Pita bread and hummus
* Lunchmeat, as an occasional thing unless you get nitrate-free meats
* string cheese and real cheese slices (pre-sliced)

Remember the goal....

The purpose of lunch is to provide the person with brain food and energy for the rest of the day. Learning happens all day long at school, and it’s so important that kids don’t have a “brain drain” between the hours of 1-3:00 because their lunch didn’t provide them the fuel they needed. Many kids also need energy for after-school sports or playtime. It’s okay to constantly remind your kids that good food makes you feel good, think better and get stronger.

I almost feel like she already has one foot out the door as football practice begins tonight and hence begins my what-to-do-for-dinner-when-dinner-is-at-8pm situation. But that is a post for another day.

Although Cypress is saturated with ice cream shops and wine bars, you do not see many snow cone options.

Chilly Millys has come to town!

She has a little red trailer at the corner of Grant and N. Eldridge and she boasts of New Orleans Style snow cones. We caught her right at closing time yesterday and will most certainly find ourselves holding onto summer a bit longer by visiting her again in the coming weeks.

If you know me well, you know my youngest loves him some ketchup. We were thrilled to find a shirt on a recent vacation that summed him up...it says "I put ketchup on my ketchup".

True dat

And there is no better ketchup in all the land that rivals the ketchup at Whataburger. I am talking taste and the cute little tubs. You know the ones that you just rip the top off and have instant dipping potential instead of having to open endless packets to yield 1 measly teaspoon of ketchup.

Tell me I am not alone here.

So, anyhoo....today from 5-8pm, if you show up at any Whataburger wearing orange, you will be greatly rewarded with a whataburger in celebration of their 60th birthday.

And do not forget to stash some of that yummy ketchup in your purse for late.

'Keep EJ's Open' Month

Last week my top news source, Yahoo.com, revealed to me that Top Gun was released 24 years ago.

What you talkin' 'bout, Willis?

HOW is that possible?

My bratty brother-in-law informed me he was 4 at the time.

I hope he can feel the stink-eye I am giving him all the way from H'town to Germany.

Punk.

And just like I can remember where and when I saw Maverick, Goose, Slider and Ice Man play that famous sand volleyball scene, particular music has the same effect.

Music is a great marker for memories of our lives.

I'm going to out myself by saying that sometimes the dial on my radio somehow arrives on Sunny 99.1 and when I hear a Chicago song, it takes me back to slow dancin' in the gym of my Junior High School.

Arms extended, hands on each other's shoulders (we kept it PG back then) and feet moving side to side, side to side.

I'm quite sure I was workin' some amazing hair....big bangs and Sun In, baby!

But just as High School Music captured a generation of kids a few years back, our soundtrack was Grease.

It was the word, after all.

Brace yourself..... there is something coming you are going to just L-O-V-E, LOVE.

Girls, there is going to be a Grease Sing-A-Long.

It's true!

Here's the catch.

One night only....July 25th....and limited release.

But here's the problem. One VERY important city is missing.

H'town.

Sleeping Beauty at the Berry Center

The Houston Repertoire Ballet will be performing Sleeping Beaty and Other Tales Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11 at the Berry Center.

HRB's studio is on Jackrabbit Road just off of Highway 6 and consists of local area ballerinas. In addition, Houston Ballet principal dancers Sara Webb and Connor Walsh will perform as Princess Aurora and Prince Florimond in the timeless tale of Sleeping Beauty’s Aurora’s Wedding. HRB is the organization that performed Cinderella last spring at the Berry Center and they also perform the Nutcracker annually in Tomball.

*Precious Dancers Academy: a special and whimsical event where your princess learns she is truly royal because Christ is King (1 Peter 2:9). We will have a giggly girly time learning through Princess Fun Dance, Protocol Etiquette, Regal Crafts, Courtly Games and Castle Story Time. FM 1960 Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade

The 1960 Parade Committee is excited to announce the upcoming 32nd Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade for Sunday, March 14th, 2010. The parade benefits Cypress Creek EMS. Thanks to the community, the parade committee has raised over $100,000 over the last 5 years!

The parade is presented by an all volunteer committee. No administrative costs are deducted from your contribution! We need your sponsorship to meet the financial needs of this popular community event. It is your support that makes the parade possible.

Cypress Creek EMS is the volunteer-based 9-1-1 ambulance service covering 250 square miles of North/Northwest Harris County. They respond to approximately 30,000 calls annually and serve over 50,000 people. Community support has always been at the core of the organization's success.

The parade begins at 2 p.m. and proceeds down FM 1960 from Champion Forest Drive to Kuykendahl. Last year, over 100 entries and at least 75,000 spectators attended the parade. This is one of the largest community events in the Houston area!
